Over the years, there has been a proliferation of various food craze. There is the meatless diet, no carb, Atkins, and the list goes on. Now there is the alkaline epidemic, though many are unclear about the importance or the health benefits of this diet.

Your body can be alkaline or acidic, and it is said that certain non-communicable diseases cannot live in an alkaline environment. According to Chef Noel Cunningham, an alkaline diet is traditionally for individuals who have a pH (potential of hydrogen this is the scale of acidity) greater than 7.45, which is determined by a medical practitioner.

While this is the case, there are individuals who uses this diet for weight loss, to boost the immune system, and to increase energy level. Cunningham notes that other benefits include lowering the risk of hypertension and stroke, chronic pain and inflammation.

If you want to try this diet, here are some recommendations of what to include;

Raw Foods and Plant Protein:

 

1. Spirulina

2. Chia seeds

3. Quinoa

4. Black beans

5. Kidney beans

 

Fruits that are low in acidic content:

 

1. Ripe banana

2. Avocado

3. Apple

4. Grapes

5. Watermelon

 

Other recommendations:

 

1. All greens and leafy vegetables are a must.

2. Tofu is good

3. Goat and almond milk

4. Use oils such as avocado, coconut and flax oil when preparing foods.

5. Okra

There are many other foods but this is to just get you started.

 

Here are things that you should avoid

 

Foods that are high in sodium

1. Lentils

2. Eggs

3. Milk

4. Processed cereals

5. Cold cuts

6. Peanuts

7. Walnuts

 

Other things to avoid:

 

1. Wholewheat products

2. Pasta

3. Caffeine drinks

4. Alcohol

5. Citrus
